The Five Things We Check

These five show whether a set of books can be trusted. Each one takes a few minutes to look at and tells you a lot.

1

Reconciliations

How far each bank and credit card account is reconciled, and whether the reconciled balance matches the statement.

2

Uncategorized transactions

How much is sitting in Uncategorized, Ask My Accountant or a suspense account, and how old it is.

3

Undeposited Funds and clearing accounts

Whether payments are piling up in Undeposited Funds or a clearing account instead of landing in the bank.

4

Payroll and sales tax balances

What the books say is owed for payroll and sales tax, next to what has actually been paid.

5

How sales are recorded

Whether sales come in from your POS or payment processor by category, or are bank deposits booked as income.

How the Review Works

Three steps. All you need is 30 minutes and your books open.

1

Pick a time

Choose a 30-minute slot below and answer a few short questions about your business and your software.

2

Share your screen

On the call you open your books and we look together. Nothing is changed. If you prefer, add us as an accountant user in QuickBooks and remove us afterward.

3

Get the summary

Within two business days you get a one-page written summary by email. It is yours to keep whether or not you hire us.

What the summary is, and is not. It lists what we found for each of the five checks, in plain English. It describes what is in your books. It does not tell you how to run your business, and it is not tax advice. We keep a limited number of review slots each week.
Who it is for. Businesses already keeping books in QuickBooks Online, Restaurant365 or Puzzle that are behind, unsure of their numbers, or about to hand the books to a CPA. Just starting out with no books yet? Book a free consultation instead. Already pay a bookkeeper and want to check the work first? Here are five things to ask them for.

Free Books Review FAQ

The questions owners ask before booking.

Is the books review really free?

Yes. There is no card and no obligation. If your books are in good shape, the summary will say so.

Do you need my login?

No. You share your screen on the call. If you would rather, you can add us as an accountant user in QuickBooks and remove us any time.

Will you change anything in my books?

No. The review is read-only. We look and write down what we see.

What software do you review?

QuickBooks Online, Restaurant365 and Puzzle. If your books are somewhere else, book a free consultation instead and we will talk through it.

How is this different from the free consultation?

The consultation is a 15-minute conversation about whether Tides is a fit. The review is 30 minutes inside your actual books, and you get a written summary afterward.

What happens after the review?

You get the summary. If you want help with what it shows, we quote catch-up or monthly bookkeeping at the prices on our pricing page. If not, the summary is still yours.

Is this tax advice?

No. It is a review of bookkeeping records. We do not prepare tax returns or give tax advice, so take tax questions to your CPA.

Before you book: have your books open and ready to share on the call. Reviews are for business owners looking at their own books. Sales, vendor, and agency pitches booked on this calendar will be declined.
