Puzzle Accounting Review: A Certified Advisor's Take

I'm a Certified Puzzle Advisor, and I run my own company's books in Puzzle. So this isn't a review from someone who clicked around a free trial. The short version: Puzzle is the best fit I've found for startups and service businesses whose money moves through Stripe and modern banks. For restaurants, inventory-heavy retailers and contractors who live on job costing, QuickBooks Online is still the better call.

What Puzzle is

Puzzle is AI-native accounting software built for startups. It's a full general ledger, not a dashboard that sits on top of QuickBooks. You can run your whole set of books in it.

Three things set it apart:

What it does well

Cash and accrual from the same ledger

This is my favorite feature. Puzzle keeps cash-basis and accrual-basis books at the same time, from the same data. A founder can watch runway on a cash basis while investors and lenders get accrual financials, with no second file and no conversion work at year-end. If the difference between the two is fuzzy, cash vs. accrual accounting explains it.

Stripe revenue recognition

For subscription businesses, Puzzle automates revenue recognition for Stripe, so annual plans get recognized month by month and deferred revenue stays right without a spreadsheet on the side. In QuickBooks that usually means manual journal entries or another paid app.

Startup metrics without spreadsheets

Burn rate, runway, MRR and ARR are just there. For a founder who wants to know where things stand before a board meeting, that's worth a lot.

It's built to be used with an accountant

Puzzle expects a bookkeeper or accountant to be in the file alongside the founder, which is how it should work. The AI does the first pass, and a person reviews it and closes the month.

Where QuickBooks Online still wins

Things I've learned running books in Puzzle

A few practical notes you won't find in the marketing:

Who Puzzle fits

Good fitProbably not
SaaS and subscription startups on StripeRestaurants and bars
Venture-backed or bootstrapped founders who want live metricsInventory-heavy retail and wholesale
Agencies and consultancies on Mercury, Brex or RampContractors who rely on job costing
Businesses that need cash and accrual views at onceBusinesses whose CPA insists on QuickBooks

Do you still need a bookkeeper?

Yes, though for less of the grunt work. The AI takes a big share of categorization. Someone still has to reconcile every account to the statement, book accruals, review what the AI got wrong, close the month and hand your CPA a clean file. That's the part we do. Puzzle review FAQ

What is Puzzle accounting software?

AI-native accounting software built for startups. It's a full general ledger with real-time financials, AI transaction categorization, and native connections to Stripe, Mercury, Brex and Ramp.

Is Puzzle better than QuickBooks?

For startups on Stripe and modern banks, often yes. For restaurants, inventory-heavy businesses and contractors who depend on job costing, QuickBooks Online is usually the better fit.

Does Puzzle support cash and accrual accounting?

Yes. Puzzle keeps cash-basis and accrual-basis books from the same ledger at the same time, so you can track runway in cash and report accrual financials to investors.

Can Puzzle do revenue recognition for Stripe?

Yes. It automates Stripe revenue recognition and deferred revenue for subscription businesses, so you don't need a separate spreadsheet.

Do I still need a bookkeeper if I use Puzzle?

Yes. The AI handles much of the categorizing, but someone still reconciles to bank statements, books accruals, reviews errors and closes the month.
